Barnstable House Garden - Brize Norton

Nestled between a pre 13th Century, Grade II* listed Norman Church, St Britius and Church Farm House, being one of the moated Manor’s in its historical past, Barnstable House lies a short distance away. The house is located within the curtilage of the present day listed Manor House complex (not open). It was a former agricultural Barn converted around 40 years ago into a dwelling for domestic use.

The garden lies within a stone walled courtyard with borrowed views of the Manor House and a backdrop of a row of mature lime trees to the south, with open fields of grazing land to the west. The garden has been greatly developed over the past 20 years, or so. There is a graveled driveway, and Moongate style structure with profuse planting overhead, with rose’s climbing to either side. Further into the garden there are various potted tree’s, a Gazebo with climbers and colourful seating, surrounded by tightly planted borders, shrubs, a mature Magnolia, grandiflora, exmouth and a small elevated greenhouse.

Towards the front of the house is a secluded Mediterranean styled patio, with pots of climbers of roses, clematis, akeba, pomegranate and an agave.  The patio area on one side is covered with a fresco wall painting. Also, there is an Orangery open with plants, and a display of life sized soft sculptures, depicting the Mad Hatter at a Tea Party, along with Alice and friends.

The new roof garden above the large flat roof of the garage is now in place. The garden itself is not huge, but some of the best things come in small parcels.

Brize Norton is a Domesday Village in the Cotswolds not far from Burford and Bampton (of Downton Abbey fame).

We have a Norman Church with many interesting features including our crusader knight and  links with RAF Brize Norton. There is a flower festival in the church on the day we open our gardens.

One of our Open Gardens has a listed Dove Cote.

We offer a pleasant afternoon for visitors with tea and cakes provided by the WI and Grange Farm.   There are also two hostelries.

Local attractions include the recently opened Crocodile World.
