The Christian in the Workplace

The following is based on Andrew Tweedy's sermon on Sunday, 22 June 2003

Introduction

Andrew Tweedy introduced the second of the series on the theme of Christian Lifestyle.  He explained that his sermon was meant for everyone, those who worked for a living as well as those who did not but who nevertheless undertook other tasks.  He argued for us all to be "busy" in our lives and not to be busybodies.

He cited numerous references to work from the bible:

  • Matthew 25.14-30 Use talents God has given you with all your strength & enthusiasm.
  • Origins of Work Genesis 1-2. God worked and we (made in his image) should work too.
  • Genesis 3. After the Fall, work became harder, but it is not intrinsically evil.
  • Christ worked (Jn5.17) and so did the Apostles.
  • Principles for Work Work as if for Christ (Colossians 3.23-24).
  • Be salt and light in the world (Matt 5.13-16).
  • Shine like stars in a crooked and depraved generation (Phil 2.15).

Andrew suggested that we should transform the place where you are, introducing and maintaining a Christian lifestyle into the workplace.  He admitted that thus was easier said than done.  What can be done to make success more likely?

Establish a rhythm of life

Make sure there is a pattern of prayer, confession and theological reflection which supports and sustains you in your work. Without this you will probably go on making the same mistakes.

Build a support network

Network with other Christians in your workplace or organisation.  Build or join a Home Group or Prayer Partner.  When you meet difficulties phone a friend (or failing all else dial Jeremiah 333).

Use your Father’s eyes

Ask God to help you see yourself, others and your work as He sees them. Be a listener and an encourager (both are in short supply).  Be a “Guardian Angel” to your colleagues and customers.

Be a Living Signpost

People will notice how you deal with success, failure, unfairness, disappointment, setbacks etc.  An anti-christian work environment may cause you to decide whether to stay or leave.

Andrew concluded with the words from Ephesians 6.5-7 urging us all to be an exemplary workplace Christian.
